Abstract

The development of information technology (IT) has created various new terms that require mastery of specific vocabulary in various languages, including Arabic. However, previous studies have shown that the availability of Arabic vocabulary related to the IT field is still limited and difficult for students to access. This creates a major challenge in the teaching and learning (T&L) process, especially among students taking Arabic courses in higher education institutions. This study is a survey and initial development (prototype) that aims to explore the potential of using 2D animation in assisting in mastery of Arabic vocabulary based on IT. The methodology involves document analysis to identify relevant IT terms as well as a survey of a small group of university students to assess their perceptions of learning methods using 2D animation. Students showed high interest in the 2D animation approach which is considered more interactive, fun, and helps to relate terms to the actual context of IT use. The results of this survey suggest that 2D animation has the potential to be an effective teaching medium to enrich contemporary Arabic vocabulary, especially in the IT field. This study forms the basis for further research involving the development of interactive animation modules and evaluation of their effectiveness. Therefore, this initial survey is in line with efforts to strengthen the integration of language, technology, and innovation in higher education in Malaysia.
